Using Rational Coping Statements in Weight Loss Sessions

When hypnotizing clients to lose weight, it is often helpful to use a number of strategies in one session. I have found three benefits to using rational coping statements in the hypnosis sessions. The first is that increased frustration tolerance helps build success in weight loss by helping clients to manage the frustration of the plateaus and the reduction of food at these plateaus. Secondly, these coping statements are transferrable to other frustrating situations in life, and third the statements promote unconditional self acceptance which facilitates change.

When people are working to lose weight, they often get to a plateau or a set point. Albert Ellis, Michael Abrams, and Lidia Dengelegi have written a ground breaking book, The Art And Science Of Rational Eating, which describes the genetics of weight loss and the built-in set points. When clients encounter the set points, they often lose hope and become frustrated. When they utilize the rational coping statements, they are able to use a skill with their conscious mind which is helpful in managing the frustration of the weight loss process.

When people have difficulty tolerating frustration, it is usually not just in that area. Oftentimes, they harbor irrational beliefs which they repeat to themselves. These statements are repeated often enough that they become automatic and part of the subconscious thinking. When I undertook a weight loss program, I made myself hypnosis scripts and was successful in losing the thirty pounds that I had to lose largely due to hypnosis and rational coping statements. I began to repeat the rational statements automatically and these statements made it easier for me to achieve my goal. Other areas of my life that were positively effected by the suggestions were: work frustrations at a mental health clinic, frustrations with my Seeing-Eye dog, and frustrations with strangers. It did not just benefit me in weight loss, but in all of the other frustrating areas of my life.

Self acceptance is the final benefit. When people accept themselves, they do not put themselves down for the little things. They get back on track and listen to their recordings. All of the other hypnosis strategies are more effective in a person who accepts himself and rates his behavior rather than his personhood. People also gain the ability to accept themselves consciously as well creating the success-building attitude that builds success in many areas of their lives.
