I have found that each hypnotherapy practice develops a “life” of its own. When I graduated from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute I had no idea that I would have a website, recorded sessions, write a book or do telephone sessions. Over the course of the last several years telephone sessions have taken over my practice. It was the last thing I expected to do and, as it turns out, it is perhaps my favorite part. I have clients all over this country and several other countries as well.
There are, though, certain changes that need to be made when working with a telephone client.
• First of all, I really feel that in order to generate a closer connection, the first session should be a minimum of 90 minutes. You should spend at least 45 minutes just talking to your client and getting to know each other.
• You’ll want to length the actual hypnosis portion of your session as well. You will have to spend more time deepening over the phone than you do in face to face sessions.
• And finally, you’ll want to spend some time with your client after you have taken them out of hypnosis talking about what they have just experienced. This is something most hypnotherapists do not do during face to face sessions.
As I said, deepening take a bit longer. I have found that an extremely effective technique is to do a series of visualizations each ending with a count down. Each count down takes your client just a bit deeper and after you have gotten to know your client, it makes it easier to have them reach the level of hypnosis that is most effective for the work your are doing. During a first telephone session I recommend doing at least 3-4 images with a countdown.
It is important to listen to what is going on at the other end of the telephone line. If you listen, you’ll get a feeling as to how many count downs you’ll want to do. Also, keep in mind that you will become more comfortable with each telephone session that you do. After you’ve done your series of countdowns, it is then time to work with the suggestions that you have developed for their particular issues.
It is also important to make sure that you not only do a count out at the end of your session, but you should do a couple of count outs and reinforce that they are no longer under hypnosis AND that they are no longer suggestible.
Using this technique I have never once not had a client not go under. I believe that clients actually go deeper and are more open to suggestion during a phone session that face to face. I’ve spend some time thinking about this and I believe it is because they are in their own environment and feel more secure. Even my local clients who insist on an initial face to face session will switch to phone sessions after they have tried one.
If you are still hesitant about doing a phone session, contact me. I would be more than willing to assist you with your first phone session.
