Irritable Bowel Syndrome is uncomfortable and unpleasant. As the name implies, if you suffer from IBS it feels as if your bowel is in a bad mood, unsure of the manner in which it is going to express itself from one moment to the next. One moment your bowel appears to be smiling and happy, lulling you into a false sense of security, and then wham! Mr grumpy decides to rear his irritable head and throws a tantrum once again.

You never quite know what "Mr irritable bowel" is going to do next. It's as if he's participating in a game of charades. As soon as you make a correct guess as to what he's up to, he starts to play a different part. Sometimes he can be quietly moody, but you can feel his rumblings like a volcano moving around whilst he's trying to decide when exactly to erupt. You in the meantime are left wondering in what way he will choose to display his irritability.

The question of how to smooth down his ruffled feathers has been posed a million times. How can you gain control of your own bowel? Most people try a variety of different things. Some work for you for a while, others don't. A lucky few find their cure for IBS and move forwards in life with a happy smile of relief.

Whatever treatment for IBS that you pursue, it is important to do everything you can to feel that you are taking control. This is true in the treatment of any ailment. When you feel in control and positive about an outcome, your treatment will always be more successful than if you are despondent and negative. Let's face it, the placebo response proves to us the fact that your mind is incredibly powerful; in 30% of cases (on average) just thinking that something will help will make you feel a whole lot better.

Your mind and body are inexorably linked. You can learn to use your mind to direct your body and this has been proven to have a very powerful therapeutic effect in many areas on disease. In the treatment of IBS, scientific research has shown that hypnosis and visualization therapy is often more effective than drugs. Not only that, treatment of IBS using hypnosis has been proven to benefit all symptoms, unlike drugs which treat one symptom or another. A hypnotic cure for IBS also has a beneficial long term effect; it is not just a temporary flash in the pan.

You really can use your mind to tell your body to relax and chill out. You can use hypnosis to trigger a natural relaxation response within your physiology and visualization to imagine a better humored bowel action. You can retrain your irritable bowel to be meek, mild and well behaved.
