Emotional Disorders
When we refer to emotional disorders we refer to psychological disorders that affect emotion; for example, anxiety or depression.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an example of how the effect of trauma plays a significant role in altering the emotional and psychological make-up of a person. PTSD not only involves the victim, but tends to have an adverse effect upon their family and friends too. Strong emotional forces project themselves outwardly when triggered, often making the sufferer irrational and unpredictable. Recurrent recollections, external cues, disturbing dreams, all can make life very hard for someone with PTSD. A person recovering from trauma may avoid people, conversations and stimuli that remind them of what's happened. This is natural and understandable, but when a person hides from the fact that something bad has happened to them, by simply trying to ignore or forget it, this is when emotion can take on a new and more destructive form. PTSD is serious and must be treated by a healthcare professional.

With emotional disorders, action must be taken inside the subconscious. It is the seat of your primary emotions, where your core feelings are accessed and revived. Core feelings are instinctively driven and spontaneously surface in the body in the form of motivation and drive. Emotion is the motivating power of the mind. The reason we do what we feel, is because our core feelings are driving us. But when they are not present, we tend to rely on our secondary emotions. An example of this would be feeling disappointed when your core feeling is anger. If anger does not express itself, this emotion can turn into anxiety. The real difference between a primary emotion and a secondary emotion is that primary emotions tend to come and go, spurring you into action when you are connected to your core feelings. But secondary emotions tend to feel more constant and with no real significant driving force. Trauma has the ability to disconnect a person from their primary emotions, leaving them more reliant on their secondary ones. Left to their own devices, anxiety and unrealistic fear have the power to move a person from normal worry into serious depression.

Depression
Depression could be described as a state of intense sadness and despair that has advanced to the point where it is affecting the personal, family and social life of the individual. Depression can be mild, moderate or severe in intensity. Many people with depression don't seek treatment. This is usually because they simply don't recognize their illness as being treatable. Depression is treatable and should not be ignored. Set-backs in life such as financial loss, marital problems, and illness, all can give rise to depressive symptoms such as sadness, fatigue, and a general lack of interest. Depression can be overcome, but first the sufferer must regain control with professional help.

Many people experience reactive depression at some point in their lives. A death in the family or losing a job can be enough to set up the precondition for disappointment to become reactionary in the future. During a bout of reactive depression, a person can be irritable and preoccupied by what's happened to them. But this dull mood usually lifts as they begin to recover. It is probably the most common type of depression.

Endogenous (unipolar) depression is when depression has its origins in the psyche. If an unpleasant life experience is responsible, it is most likely to have happened sometime in the past. Endogenous depression can be chemical or biological in make-up as well as psychological and emotional. Fatigue can be an early symptom, with the individual frequently waking at intervals throughout the night. They may feel very low in the morning, finding even the most simplest of tasks impossible to do. This can make life very difficult for the sufferer; the depression is coming from within and is being nurtured and kept alive by the current program running in the subconscious.

Bipolar depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by the alternations of manic and depressive states. Its symptoms include those of endogenous depression. But there are also periods of mania during which the depression can create feelings of elation in the mind and body. This mania or elation, although pleasurable to experience, can be detrimental to health. Biological susceptibility to inheriting depression can be one cause. But additional factors like marital and work-related stresses must always also be considered. A person with no family history of bipolar may develop it, beginning perhaps with a reactive episode, followed by more episodes, until eventually the person has become both manic and depressive. People with very low self-esteem can be prone to this type of depression. Self-hypnosis is very effective in treating bipolar depression, but professional help must be sought first. This is most important!

Dysthymia is a mood disorder characterized by mild to moderate depression with symptoms of sadness, despair, engulfment, pessimism and loss of appetite. It typically develops in early adulthood and is more common in adult women. Often there is no obvious cause; but its symptoms can be brought on by anxiety, stress, illness, substance abuse, etc. It has the genetic ability to run in families, but is not as severe as other types of depression.

Dysthymia as an emotional disorder is paradoxical in nature. Although its symptoms are relatively mild on a daily basis, over a lifetime of endurance they take their toll on the body.

Ways to Help Overcome Depression (In Alliance with Professional Help)

Consult a healthcare professional and get to the root cause of your depression.

Know that you have the necessary skills and resources to overcome it.

Be willing to change what you are presently doing.
Stay in control of your breathing. Spot-check it regularly.
Make time to implant vivid images of change.
Implant positive suggestions and healthy self-images throughout the day.

Think of depression as something you've already overcome.

Look after your diet. Drink plenty of water and eat well.

Keep your mind interested and divert attention to what is external.

Take up a hobby if you don't already have one.

Get into the fresh air as often as possible. Cut down on television.

If you notice that you are feeling sorry for yourself, Stop!
Set challenging, realistic goals to be achieved on a daily basis.

Postpone stressful decision making until your head feels clear.

Be on your guard for sabotage. It's one of the main reasons people don't recover from depression. By acknowledging it when it rises, you help overtake it.

One step forward and two steps back is just a concept that doesn't apply to real life.

If you feel as though you are doing well and then experience a setback, remember that here you have a choice. You can revert back to old ways or you can simply return to the peace you were enjoying before the setback occurred.

Make sure you laugh at yourself from time to time. This takes the edge out of depression and helps you to overcome fear.
