The Power of Suggestion
In hypnosis, you are far more suggestible than in normal wakefulness. When you make use of the trance state for inducing suggestion, the conscious mind is then far less likely to interfere in the form of argument. This allows the process of implanting suggestion to be more successful than if you were simply to give your mind an instruction to change. Even in a light state of hypnosis, suggestibility is significantly increased.

When the television is on you naturally slip into a light state of trance as you become engrossed in what you are watching. Advertisers use this to their advantage by repeating suggestive adverts over and over again until their messages have sunk deeply into your programming. Because your concentration is so focused and absorbed, you often don’t respond to questions being asked of you by others present in the room, even though at some level you can hear them. It is during this period of narrowed awareness that suggestion has the most effect, and is why television is probably the most popular medium for persuasive advertisement. Repetition is the key to selling an idea to your deeper mind. But if you allow yourself to get too bombarded with externally induced suggestion, this is when your mind can become confused as to what your real aspirations are.

As children we are given suggestions by our parents that are understood and believed as fact in our developing mind. The mother plays a role similar to that of a hypnotherapist. With belief and expectancy the child looks into its mother’s eyes eagerly awaiting words of unconditional love and encouragement. Then the words come and are registered deeply in the uncritical subconscious. As we develop, instructions given to us in our earlier years remain subconsciously, shaping us into the product of our parents’ suggestions. It is only when we start becoming influenced by the wider world that we begin to formulate the ability to make up our own minds through auto-suggestion.

Children are very impressionable. Suggestion greatly affects the way they behave and adapt to society. Consider what happens if an intelligent child is told repeatedly, “You’ll never learn,” or told, “You can’t do anything right.” Negative suggestions like these, if repeated often enough, could greatly reduce their ability to reach full potential. This fact has been validated by many clients in hypnotherapy offices over the years.

Suggestion is received and acted upon whether of a positive or negative nature. This explains why you can go from being in good to bad form, or from feeling healthy to feeling sick. On meeting someone you could be asked, “Are you ok? You look a little under the weather.” Even though you feel perfectly fine, this could give rise to a change in mood and physical well-being, if you were to believe them. Twenty minutes later someone else could say, “You don’t seem yourself today.” At this stage you might respond by saying, “There’s nothing wrong with me, I’m fine!” By now their negative suggestions could have already sunk deeply and turned you into the exact opposite of how you felt originally. This is how easily suggestion can affect you, for it is at the center of why you think, feel and act in the manner you do. It is one of the most common causes of emotional disturbance. This is why you must be on your guard from negative suggestion at all times.

Almost every second of the day you communicate to your subconscious through suggestion. How you use suggestion is under your control. So if you want your outlook on life to be positive, you must phrase suggestions positively. The subconscious acts upon your internal language believing that the information you are giving it is true. So it’s important that from this moment on, you remove any negative suggestions that you may have in your dictionary at present. This is done by giving your mind positively phrased suggestions on a regular basis in the form of repeated affirmations, both in self-hypnosis and throughout the day.

One way of combating negative suggestion is by not being too hard on yourself whenever you make a mistake or slip up. Making mistakes is part of being human. But being hard on yourself with language, such as I’m an idiot, only serves to help you make the same mistakes again. Whenever you call yourself a name like idiot the subconscious acts in accordance with your belief system. Then it goes about doing everything in its power to fulfill what it believes is your desired intention. The reason why some people develop anxiety and depression is because at some stage they may have begun reinforcing a suggestion that was made by someone else, a suggestion such as, “I think you may be suffering from depression.” This suggestion may have come from a reputable source in a time of emotional need. As a result it may have been believed, implanted and reinforced from that point on. This is why you must have your earmuffs on in the presence of potentially life changing words.

When you shape suggestions correctly through positive affirmation you are defining how you want your character and reality to be. By remaining vigilant with the language you use, there is less chance of falling victim to that which you fear becoming. Understanding that your mind is highly susceptible to suggestive influence puts you in a better position to recognize words that could potentially have a negative or even detrimental effect upon you. So whenever you hear a suggestion like life is tough, the way you stop these words having a negative effect upon you is by replacing them immediately with the suggestion life is good.

The most important concept to remember regarding suggestion is: imagination is the language of the subconscious. This means that the wording must indicate the desired result rather than focusing on the problem. In other words, keep the affirmation positive rather than negative. For example, I am confident is better than I am not afraid. If you have not used positive affirmations before, like I am happy, or I feel great, it may seem a little strange at the beginning and may feel as though you are lying to yourself. Whether you feel happy or not, the suggestion I am happy is believed and accepted by the subconscious as fact, especially if there is belief and expectancy put behind it. If this type of suggestion is reinforced through repetition, within a short period of time your deeper mind will accept that this is your desired intention and will go about making the necessary changes to make real your suggestion. One does not have to be in trance for suggestion to take effect. But the reason we apply suggestion in the hypnotic state is so there is little or no opposition made by the conscious mind which has now been by-passed through concentration and relaxation.

When receiving suggestions the subconscious has the IQ of an intelligent child, so avoid using long words or complicated phrases. Simple, positive and direct words have the greatest effect, so keep it basic! Make sure the suggestions you give yourself are not beyond your capabilities. Suggestions must coincide with your belief system and be achievable in reality.

Repetition is what reinforces suggestion and helps make it become an instinctive part of your behavioral program. The more you repeat a suggestion, the deeper it takes root. For this reason we must choose our words wisely. Use words like I am instead of I will. If you give the subconscious a suggestion to be carried out at some vague point in the future, there’s a good chance that when you get to the day in question, it will have forgotten what you asked of it. Keep suggestions in the present tense and say them as if they are an already accomplished fact. The same goes for commands to be carried out in the future, for example, “It’s June the 10th, the day of my speech. I am confident and relaxed, and I am delivering an excellent speech to all assembled.” If the mind is told I am confident, it registers this suggestion as something that is already true and accomplished, and not as something that is vague and distant like I will be confident.

When implanting suggestions or important goals you wish to achieve, make sure to work on one goal at a time. If you give your subconscious too many goals at once, it only gets confused. For example, if you want to give up smoking, stay focused on that goal and don’t overload your mind with a list of other things you want to give up as well. It’s best to deal with one area of improvement at a time.

Keep all suggestions focused positively on the desired result and avoid using negative suggestions. This is called the law of reversed effect. People often give themselves negative suggestions even when their intentions are good, for example, “I won’t eat chocolate cake or sweets.” This type of suggestion only spurs the imagination to render an image of chocolate cake and sweets. Once this image has taken root in the subconscious, it must be carried out in reality. What the mind perceives, the mind achieves. So what you should be saying is “I enjoy eating healthy food,” instead of “I won’t eat chocolate cake or sweets.” Now a picture of healthy food is being imagined in the mind and the subconscious can clearly understand what foods are desirable for you to eat. Remember to keep the most important suggestions till last. The subconscious remembers all suggestions it is given, but it can more readily carry out ones given towards the end of the self-hypnotic session. Make sure to use words that have emotion and feeling behind them such as wonderful, great, beautiful, powerful, successful, proud, etc. When you say them in your mind, say them with conviction. Good Luck!
