When we focus on the future what we focus on has a big impact on the outcome. There is a natural law which says you get more of what you focus on, and the mistake a lot of people make is that they focus on what the don’t want because they don’t want it and then end up creating more of that thing because they’re focusing on it. If I told you that whatever you do you mustn’t think of a pink elephant I know that the first thing you’ll do is think of the pink elephant in order not to think about it. If you’re trying not to think about things going wrong, what you’re actually doing is thinking about those things. Your subconscious mind doesn’t hear negatives. This is why a hypnotherapist usually frames suggestions in a positive way. Most hypnotherapists won’t say “you won’t feel stressed” they will say “you are becoming more and more calm”. The answer is to make a choice to think about things in a way that makes you feel good. Choose to imagine yourself as calm confident and successful. If you catch yourself thinking negatively, as many of us do from time to time, simply choose to return to thinking positively once again.
In order to set your goal, ask yourself the following question “What would be the last thing that has to happen for you to know you have achieved your goal?” If your goal was losing a certain amount of weight the answer to this could be “the last thing that has to happen is I’m on the scales and it says 65kg” or “the last thing that has to happen is I’m looking in the mirror and that suit fits me perfectly again”. If your goal was to do with financial or material success the answer to the question could be “the last thing that has to happen is I’m looking at my bank statement and there’s a really healthy balance” or “the last thing that has to happen is I’m unlocking the door and walking into my new home for the first time”. The point is that you to think of a scenario which for you sums up the achievement of your goal. It is important that your goal is SMART. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed. There is no point in aiming for something that isn’t possible like “I want to be able to run the marathon next week without doing any training”. But as long as your goal is something that you know can be achieved within a certain timescale then go for it. You can use this technique for lots of different goals which could be short, medium or long term. It really is a powerful yet also fun and enjoyable process. All you need do is simply imagine the situation as vividly and as often as you can.
