The traditional definitions of hypnosis and trance are somewhat awkward and ambiguous. So let`s simplify them. It`s just necessary definitions to describe what hypnosis and trance do in general.
Hypnosing: is the means used to establish a purposeful trance state.
Trance: is a mental state in which the part of the mind that filters input is bypassed, enabling the subconscious mind to automatically react to input received from the outside world.
These definitions are simple, yet accurate and to the point. During hypnosis training, you are told this is what to do, and how to do it. You don’t question why it is done. It is just understood that it is necessary to cause hypnosis because that is how you are being trained to do it.
It was now time to ask and answer those questions and find out what is really happening.
To do this, it was necessary to me to break down each of the components to compare what the intended effects were, versus what was actually experienced by the subject. I needed to answer the following questions: Did the component do what it was supposed to do? If not, what did it really do? And was it really required to be one of the steps to hypnosis at all.
I figured the best way to find the answers was to ask my clients and online subjects. For my trance solution (hypnotherapy) clients, after the session I would go over the session with them and ask them about their hypnosis experience and what they noticed about each part. The group interviewed was collectively only a little over a hundred people, but I felt the sample size was large enough to make the data fairly significant and applicable.
As I formulated the model over time, I either verified or discarded info based on percentage of response from my sample group.
About the results of my study you may learn in my book «The nature of trance».
